Lieutenant Gov. Mandela Barnes and WISCAP to help promote fight against poverty at FMFC's home opener

Forward Madison is teaming up with Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes and the Wisconsin Community Action Program Association (WISCAP) to “Show Poverty the Red Card” at the Flamingos' inaugural home opener on Saturday, April 27th at Breese Stevens Field. Lt. Gov. Barnes will be on hand for the ceremonial first kick at the start of the game, while FMFC will distribute educational materials on poverty in Wisconsin and feature in video and PA announcements throughout the night.

WISCAP, Wisconsin’s Poverty Fighting Network, is comprised of 16 local community action agencies and two single purpose agencies working across the state to address the realities of poverty and economic dislocation. According to Barnes, the partnership gives an opportunity for the Madison community to come together for a common goal - in two senses of the word.

“I’m excited to join Forward Madison FC for their first-ever match at home and I’m just as excited to stand with WISCAP against poverty," Barnes said. "Everyone in our state deserves the opportunity to thrive—regardless of their ZIP code. I’m happy to see Forward Madison and WISCAP bring awareness to an issue that affects so many families and communities in our state.”

For Forward Madison Managing Director Peter Wilt, the home opener is a perfect occasion to demonstrate the club's commitment to engaging with Madison both on and off the field.

“Forward Madison is pleased to support WISCAP at our inaugural home game," Wilt said. "It is important to build awareness of poverty in Wisconsin, make people aware of the good work WISCAP does to combat poverty and give our fans the opportunity to be part of its solution.”

“More than ten percent of Wisconsinites live below the poverty line," WISCAP Executive Director Brad Paul said. "The people of our state who struggle in these circumstances deserve our respect — and our boldest, most innovative efforts to find solutions. Sports, including soccer,
can serve as a great way to bring people together and draw attention to this important issue."
