Red Wolves make jump up the rankings as they join the postseason conversation

TAMPA, Fla. – We’re going to find a lot out about Chattanooga Red Wolves SC in the next few games, but on Saturday afternoon they made the perfect start to their playoff gauntlet thanks to a dramatic comeback against the Richmond Kickers.

That moved Chattanooga into third place in what is now looking like a more segmented League One standings, with the top four, the middle four and the bottom three each being divided by three points. In the Power Rankings, the Red Wolves get the No. 2 spot this week after responding to their only two losses of the season with three wins in their last four games.

It doesn’t get easier for Chattanooga from here. Up next is a contest with the still-undefeated Union Omaha, and that’s followed by a visit from league leader Greenville Triumph SC. Cap off September with a trip to fifth-place Forward Madison FC, which will still be fighting for a playoff spot as well, and that will be four consecutive games against current top-five opposition in the span of 15 days.

If the Red Wolves come through with flying colors, it could very well be the springboard to the League One Final the club desperately wants to be part of. If not, it will make for a tense end to the season in October.

Buckle up, Chattanooga, we’re ready to see what you’ve got.

Here’s how everything else looks this week. As always, feel free to come and yell at me on Twitter (@NJEMurray).

Summary

1 Greenville Triumph SC
(7-2-1)
Week 10: @CHA
2
Last Week: 3
After an awful end to August, Triumph SC has regained its footing in exemplary fashion to go six points clear at the top of the standings.
2 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(4-2-3)
Week 10: OMA, GVL
3
Last Week: 5
We could have been looking at a three-team race for the League One Final if not for the Red Wolves late comeback. Now, we’ve got a even better battle to look forward to.
3 Union Omaha
(4-0-4)
Week 10: @CHA, NE
2
Last Week: 1
Once again, we’ve learned you can’t count out Los Buhos in any contest. What a brilliant strike by Ferrety Sousa to keep Omaha undefeated ahead of its trip to Chattanooga on Tuesday.
4 Richmond Kickers
(4-2-2)
Week 10: ORL
2
Last Week: 2
The Kickers will be gutted their undefeated streak came to an end in a contest they seemingly had control of. Home games with Fort Lauderdale and Orlando should help things get back on track, though.
5 Forward Madison FC
(3-3-2)
Week 10: --
1
Last Week: 4
Madison must be absolutely sick of the sight of Greenville and goalkeeper Dallas Jaye. Five games, five shutouts for Triumph SC after Sunday’s defeat over Madison.
6 North Texas SC
(2-2-4)
Week 10: TUC
3
Last Week: 9
He didn’t have a goal or assist, but wouldn’t your spirits be raised as a North Texas player if you saw Arturo Rodriguez walk back onto the training field ready to get to work again? Good win in Tucson.
7 Fort Lauderdale CF
(3-3-2)
Week 10: TRM
1
Last Week: 6
A two-goal victory against your in-state rival is always nice to walk away with. Still don’t quite see FTLCF bridging the gap to the playoff contenders, though.
8 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(2-4-4)
Week 10: @FTL

Last Week: 8
The hosts looked in position to hand Omaha its first loss of the season. Then things went south in the final 20 minutes to leave Tormenta FC with only a point.
9 FC Tucson
(2-5-1)
Week 10: NE, @NTX
2
Last Week: 7
We’ve reached the point where the number of points to the playoff positions (9) is greater than Tucson’s games remaining (8). That means we’re now in must-win territory if anything good is going to come of this season.
10 New England Revolution II
(1-5-2)
Week 10: @TUC, @OMA
1
Last Week: 11
The Revolution II showed improvement in its loss to the Red Wolves last Wednesday night, which is really all that we can ask at this point.
11 Orlando City B
(1-5-3)
Week 10: @RIC
1
Last Week: 10
Seven games without a win for OCB after its loss to Fort Lauderdale. It’s now won only five of 37 games overall in its League One existence.
