SETTING THE SCENE:
Forward Madison FC is finally playing at historic Breese Stevens Field for their 2024 Home Opener. They’ll face Henny Derby rivals, Richmond Kickers, on Saturday, April 13th at 6pm.
Both teams beat Central Valley Fuego FC to tally their first win on the season. Richmond Kickers beat Fuego last weekend, 3-2, and Forward beat them the week prior, 3-0.
HENNY DERBY HISTORY
The ‘Mingos have won five out of the last six matches against the Kickers. Last season, Forward went 3-0, claiming the Henny Derby trophy with a clean sweep.
The Henny Derby began in Forward Madison’s inaugural season when both Richmond’s and Forward’s Black supporters’ groups made a friendly bet – the winner gets a bottle of Hennessey. This will now be the sixth season of the Henny Derby rivalry.
‘MINGOS LAST MATCH RECAP
Forward had a bye weekend; however, they played last Wednesday in Chicago for the second round of the US Open Cup. It was a snowy/rainy, cold night, and Chicago Fire II was able to advance in the tournament, beating the ‘Mingos 0-2.
In their last USL match, Forward Madison earned their first three points of the 2024 season, beating Central Valley Fuego FC 3-0 on the road. Goals were scored by Devin Boyce, Derek Gebhard, and John Murphy Jr, and Bernd Schipmann recorded his second shut-out on the season.
KEYS TO THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE BURISH GROUP AT UBS
With an off week under their belt and a break from traveling, Forward should be well-rested ahead of their match. Look for them to come out with high energy, especially with the home crowd cheering them on for the first time this season.
It will be interesting to see how the offense rallies back after a scoreless match against Chicago Fire II. Look for players like John Murphy and Derek Gebhard, who carried the attack in the team’s first win, to step up and create offensive threats.
NEXT MATCH:
The Flamingos will play in the Battle for Madison against UW-Madison on Saturday, April 20th at historic Breese Stevens Field. Kickoff is at 5pm CT, and tickets are still available here.
