SETTING THE SCENE:
Forward Madison FC is set to face neighbors, UW-Madison, in the annual Battle For Madison match. The match will kick off on Saturday, April 20th at 5pm CT at Breese Stevens Field.
BATTLE FOR MADISON HISTORY
Forward Madison will look to continue their unbeaten streak against the Badgers, going 2-0-2 in the last five years (the 2020 match was canceled due to COVID-19).
Most recently, the Mingos won, 3-2, in a back-and-forth match in April of last year.
‘MINGOS LAST MATCH RECAP
Forward played their 2024 Home Opener last Saturday, tying against Henny Derby rivals, Richmond Kickers, 2-2. The match was aggressive but long-time Mingo, Derek Gebhard, scored his second goal of the season. He is the club’s top goalscorer in franchise history with 14 and counting.
Newcomer Agustín Dávila also scored last weekend, netting his first goal for the pink and blue. Midfielder Devin Boyce received USL1 Team of the Week honors for the third time this season.
KEYS TO THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE BURISH GROUP AT UBS
Despite this being a bye week for Forward, the Battle For Madison will be an opportunity for the team to fine-tune their game.
- Forward struggled to find the back of the net in multiple scenarios against Richmond, so look for the offense to come hungry.
- Defensively, the ‘Mingos were vulnerable to counterattacks, which is how Richmond scored their second goal. Look for the center midfielders to provide depth and the backline to apply pressure early to deny any fast attacks.
Cherif Dieye has finally arrived in Madison for the season, and this match will be a great chance for him to develop time on the field with a team that is starting to build chemistry.
NEXT MATCH:
The Flamingos will play their first Jägermeister Cup match against Lexington next weekend on Sunday, April 28th. Watch the match on ESPN+ or stop by the Forward Club for the FMFC Watch Party. Doors open at 2pm with kickoff at 3pm CT.
