Match Action
MADISON, Wis. — Forward Madison FC defeated Portland Hearts of Pine 2-0 on Saturday night at Breese Stevens Field, behind a pair of first-half goals from Ryan Carmichael. The ‘Mingos pressed Portland’s end of the field with possession for nearly the entire match and goalkeeper JT Harms preserved a clean sheet between the pipes.
The ‘Mingos set the tempo from the very start of the match. Hakim Karamoko put a shot on goal in the third minute off a curved through ball from Ryan Carmichael, and the pressure paid off two minutes later. A strong tackle from Mark Segbers won the ball, finding Hakim Karamoko, whose shot slipped out of the keeper’s possession and created a loose ball for Ryan Carmichael to put in the back of the net in the fifth minute.
Forward Madison maintained the pressure, Geni Kanyane hitting the woodwork from just outside the box in the 28th minute, and two minutes later Ryan Carmichael making a dangerous header off the cross. In the 40th minute, Portland conceded a penalty after a foul in their box, drawing a POR yellow card, and Ryan Carmichael converted from the spot to make it 2-0, making it his 14th goal on the season.
Madison held its attacking pressure after the break, spending much of the opening stretch in Portland’s defensive third. At the other end, JT Harms came up with a crucial save off a Portland free kick in the 50th minute to protect Madison’s lead.
Joshua Bolma looked to unlock the defense with a through ball to Hakim Karamoko, but the attack was halted by an offside flag. Madison continued to create chances, with Kevin Carmichael firing a shot on goal in the 74th minute but saved by the Portland keeper.
Forward Madison held firm through the final whistle to seal the 2-0 victory and a clean sheet. Going into next weekend’s match, they will look to carry that momentum into the final regular-season match against Union Omaha on October 24.
