Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, Saturday, October 27, 2018: Veteran professional soccer player and former Major League Soccer All-Star Brian Kamler was named the first head coach and technical director of Green Bay’s new USL League Two team. The announcement of the 12-year former professional soccer player’s appointment was made by Big Top Soccer’s Managing Director Peter Wilt at a news conference at the Green Bay Distillery.
Kamler, 46, is a DePere resident who had an extensive playing career that saw him help lift eight trophies in his first four seasons as a pro with the Richmond Kickers in the year prior to MLS starting and with DC United during MLS’ first three seasons. Kamler was a 2003 All-Star with the New England Revolution and won the 1998 CONCACAF Champions League, two MLS Cups and two US Open Cup titles.
“It is an honor to have been chosen as the first head coach and technical director for Green Bay’s USL League Two team. I am excited to work with our outstanding ownership group, Peter Wilt, Dannon Anderson, and the Green Bay community in building something special here.”
The former midfielder is a St. Louis native who starred collegiately at Creighton University where he was a first team All-American and inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Kamler is one of just 15 players to play in each of MLS’s first ten seasons. In addition to DC United and New England, Kamler played for three other MLS teams – Miami Fusion, New York MetroStars and Real Salt Lake. He will be charged with finding and leading players for the team, which will be comprised of collegiate players in good standing with the NCAA.
“Brian has played for and learned from some of the greatest coaches in United States history including US Men’s National Team coaches Bob Bradley, Bruce Arena and Dave Sarachan, Liverpool great Steve Nicol and collegiate coaching legend Bob Warming. Brian will take what he’s observed as a player and now put into practice as a head coach,” Wilt said.
Green Bay USL League Two General Manager Dannon Anderson believes Kamler will be a great fit off the field as well. “Brian is one of the most respected players in MLS history. His good works in the community are well known and an important reason we believe he will be a good fit in Green Bay,” Anderson said.
Kamler was named the MLS Humanitarian of the Year in 2005. He joined with The Bringhurst Group to develop the "Kam's Kauses" foundation to give back to the Utah community. Kamler and his wife, Suzanne, set up a booth in Carnival Real, the interactive soccer area open before every RSL home game, to help raise funds for local charities and non-profits. The following charities have benefited from "Kam's Kauses": United Way of Salt Lake, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Utah Down Syndrome Foundation, The Road Home, National Disaster Relief (Hurricane Katrina), Utah Youth Soccer Association Scholarship Program, Special Olympics, Utah Food Bank, Humane Society, Boy and Girl Scouts, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Primary Children's Hospital. Kamler also was honored as the New England Revolution Humanitarian of the Year in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Next steps for Kamler are building the team with players and staff. “I will be using my network of college coaches and former professional coaches and teammates to identify the best collegiate players within the state of Wisconsin and nationally to play here in Green Bay. I’ve already spoken to Madison Pro Soccer Head Coach Daryl Shore and Peter Wilt who will help identify potential players for Green Bay’s inaugural season,” Kamler said.
“We will bring in players that Green Bay and fans throughout Northeastern Wisconsin will be proud of, both on the field and within the community,” Kamler said.
After his retirement from playing, Kamler served as Real Salt Lake’s Director of Soccer Development and television analyst. Kamler is a fan of all things Disney and with his wife Suzanne has two sons and lives in DePere.
