Forward Madison FC hosted the 2023 edition of the Battle for Madison, a friendly match against the UW-Madison Men’s soccer team. The match kicked off shortly after 6pm CT.
The first half of the match began quickly for the Flamingos. They went on the attack early leading to a Christian Chaney goal in the 4th minute. After going up early, the Flamingos kept the pressure on, but a UW counterattack ended in a shot that deflected off of Mitch Osmond into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1. A half controlled by FMFC ended 1-1 and the teams went into the break level.
Forward Madison relied on their subs in the 2nd half to provide a winning spark. In the 63rd minute, Wolfgang Prentice played a nicely weighted ball into Tino Vasquez, who fired it home for the goal. After a back and forth 2nd half, UW responded with a goal of their own in the 89th minute. With just one minute left on the clock, Forward Madison launched one more attack with a ball served in from the wing. Francis Jno-Baptiste was able to get a foot on the ball and touch it into the back of the net in the dying seconds, giving FMFC the 3-2 lead and eventual win over UW.
“It was really nice to get some guys good minutes,” Head Coach Matt Glaeser said. “When push comes to shove, tonight showed the guys who I can rely upon to close out a game and get a win.”
Next up, FMFC will round out the month of April with a Family Night match against Charlotte Independence on Saturday, April 29th at 5pm CT. This is the club’s Star Wars Night, with a special lightsaber ticket package available for purchase.
