Greenville’s first-half goal enough to defeat the Flamingos
Forward Madison, fresh off of a victory in Georgia, stayed on the road for a matchup against Greenville Triumph SC on Saturday, July 1st. FMFC looked to continue building on their franchise-record four-match winning streak and get back into first place in USL League One. The match kicked off just after 6pm CT.
Forward Madison began the match with new connections and energy from a Starting XI that looked different from the one rolled out in the past match. Greenville applied early pressure, conceding a few fouls but setting the pace for what was to come. FMFC goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann made a massive save in the 16th minute to keep the match level at 0-0. In the 33rd minute, Greenville was awarded a penalty kick after FMFC midfielder Stephen Payne was called for a hand ball in the box and given a yellow card. Although Schipmann guessed correctly and got a touch on the ball, Greenville capitalized on the opportunity and went into halftime up 1-0.
Christian Chaney, Jayden Onen, and Isidro Martinez were brought on for the second half to bring urgency and playmaking opportunities. In the 68th minute, Forward Madison had a golden opportunity to equalize the match when FMFC striker Christian Chaney found himself wide open in the box. Chaney found the back of the net, but the goal was called back due to an offside in the buildup. FMFC continued creating chances in the final third, but couldn’t connect on final passes to get a solid shot on goal. Five minutes of added time were tacked on to the end of the match, but the Flamingos were unable to find an equalizer.
“It was a tough loss for us,” FMFC striker Christian Chaney said. “We’ve had a long week of travel and I think the fatigue really set in for us tonight. It’s no excuse, we need to pull through that moving forward.”
“It was a solid performance tonight from the defense,” FMFC captain Mitch Osmond said. “We gave up very little in the back.”
“I’m really proud of the team after the extremely difficult week and travel,” FMFC Head Coach Matt Glaeser said. “We showed a lot of grit and never gave up.”
“We now have to accept the result, take it in stride, and move on,” Glaeser said.
Next up, Forward Madison returns home to Breese Stevens Field after the 4th of July holiday to play Central Valley Fuego FC on Saturday, July 8th at 7pm CT. Tickets for the match can be purchased here.
