A first half goal by FMFC’s Christian Chaney scored in front of 2nd largest crowd in club history
MADISON, WI: Forward Madison stayed in Madison for a quick two-game home streak to play Greenville Triumph SC. Before the match, FMFC was in fourth place in the USL League One, and Greenville was one point behind the ‘Mingos. The match was played in front of 4,828 fans, the 2nd largest crowd in Forward Madison history.
The beginning of the first half started with intensity and determination from Forward Madison FC. The ‘Mingos started quick, energized by the boisterous crowd in the stadium. Both teams were aggressive, as the match started with a few fouls from each side. In the 11th minute, FMFC midfielder Isidro Martinez played a through ball to striker Christian Chaney who took a few touches and slotted the ball through the Greenville’s goalkeeper and into the back of the net. With a lead of 1-0, Forward Madison was hungry for more. As the first half progressed, the match became physical, slowing down the pace of play. In the 35th minute, Forward Madison had a chance to increase their lead; however, the shot by Jayden Onen hit the crossbar. In the 37th minute, the Forward Madison bench received a red card. The half ended with Forward Madison up 1-0.
The second half started in Greenville’s favor, with a major opportunity in the 46th minute. This opportunity was thwarted by the FMFC defense. However, the visiting team was able to tie the match in the 52nd minute with a goal from Noah Franke. From this moment, play stayed stagnant and aggressive for both teams, as each were urgently searching for a breakthrough moment to put their squad on top. Forward Madison had a few dangerous opportunities to put one in the back of the net, including a strike from midfielder Jayden Onen, who rifled the shot from beyond the 18-yard box, but hit the crossbar. After three minutes of stoppage time, both teams finished the night with one point after a 1-1 final score.
“We’re going to continue to play Forward Madison football,” Head Coach Matt Glaeser said. “I thought we did that. And we were a bit unlucky in the second half to not get the win. But like I said, I thought I think the message has to stay the same. We know we know our backs are against the wall. We know no one’s gonna give us anything and we’re gonna have to go out and earn everything that we get the guys know that, they’re bought into it.”
“It’s a great group of guys” Glaeser continued. “I’m so happy with this group. I think we have a fantastic team.”
“I think everyone is going to be called upon the rest of the season,” FMFC captain Mitch Osmond said. “We’re still in a great spot. We’re in a good position on the table. We have we have a lot of game still with the teams around us which allows us to control our destiny and control where we end up in at the end of the regular season.”
