Forward Madison FC Falls Short on the Road in Tennessee

An initial FMFC goal was answered with three from Chattanooga as ‘Mingos lose in USL League One action

Forward Madison FC finished their three-week road streak, traveling to Tennessee on Saturday, September 2nd, to face Chattanooga Red Wolves SC for the third time this season. Forward Madison entered this match in fifth place in the USL League One standings, and Chattanooga entered in eleventh. The match kicked off just after 6:30pm CT.

The ‘Mingos started the match quickly, looking to attack early. In the 8th minute, Forward Madison midfielder Derek Gebhard gave his squad their first goal of the night. Gebhard dribbled with speed down the left side of the field to the edge of the 6-yard box where he rifled a shot to the far post to put FMFC up 1-0. Forward Madison continued to put pressure on Chattanooga’s defense, with a few opportunities from strikers Jayden Onen and Christian Chaney. However, Chattanooga wouldn’t back down and in the 45th minute, defender Nicolas Cardona headed the ball past FMFC goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann to level the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Chattanooga picked up where they left off to start the second half. In the 65th minute, defender Mekeil Williams buried his strike into the back of the net to put the Red Wolves up 2-1. While Forward Madison tried to gain offensive momentum, Chattanooga was quick to counter and spread the ball wide to keep the visiting team on their toes. In the 77th minute, Chattanooga capitalized again to increase their lead to 3-1. Forward Madison made attacking attempts in the late minutes of the match, but were unable to muster a dangerous chance and the match ended 3-1 in favor of Chattanooga.

“I thought we played well in the first half and then struggled in the second,” FMFC Head Coach Matt Glaeser said. “We lacked the energy and focus needed to get three points on the road.”

“We will recover,” Glaeser continued. “We need to try to get players healthy and improve overall before the next match on the 9th.”

“We’re letting in too many goals right now,” FMFC winger Derek Gebhard said. “All of us are aware of it so we’re focused on making sure we change our mentality as a group. We’re coming into some of these games too flat or coming out of the half too flat, so we have to make sure we stick together and remain focused on the goal.”

“As a team, we have to get back to playing harder and being tougher to score against,” FMFC defender Sam Brotherton said. “We’ll look to cut out individual errors and regroup as a squad for next match.”
