Flamingos unable to find the back of the net on the road
Forward Madison FC traveled to Colorado for their second-to-last game of the 2023 regular season. The Flamingos faced third-place Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC for the third time this season. FMFC entered this match in sixth place, looking to stay in playoff contention. The match kicked off just after 8pm CT.
The attacking started quickly for the Flamingos, when Nazeem Bartman fired a cross into the box to Christian Chaney in the 1st minute of the match. Northern Colorado’s goalkeeper was able to handle the cross, but FMFC kept their foot on the offensive. Northern Colorado was able to counter FMFC’s attack and launch their own, including a shot from outside the box that went just over the bar in the 18th minute. A golden opportunity came for the ‘Gos in the 36th minute, when a Derek Gebhard shot from inside the Northern Colorado box went just wide of the target. The first half ended 0-0, with both clubs looking for goals as they headed into the second 45’.
The second half started quickly for Northern Colorado when they were able to convert a free kick in a dangerous position to take a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute. FMFC would look to even up the score with substitutes, Pierre da Silva and Jayden Onen, who both came into the match in the 60th minute. Northern Colorado took advantage of an opportunity in the 70th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Trevor Amann stepped up to the spot and converted with a kick into the bottom right of the net to double the lead. While Forward Madison launched attacks to try to get a goal back, Northern Colorado was strong defensively and thwarted the attempts. The match eventually ended 2-0 in favor of Northern Colorado.
Next up, Forward Madison FC plays their last regular season home match at Breese Stevens Field. If the Flamingos win, they secure a spot in the USL League One playoffs. They’ll face rivals Union Omaha on Saturday, October 14th, at 6pm CT. It’s Fan Appreciation Night for the club, and tickets can be purchased here.
