Christian Chaney’s tying goal proved not enough in 1 – 4 loss to Hailstorm
Forward Madison FC traveled to Colorado for the USL League One quarterfinals. They faced third-ranked Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC, a team the ‘Mingos have already battled three times this season. Forward fans flocked to the Forward Club to watch their squad play in their first playoff match since 2019. The match kicked off just after 8pm CT.
Anticipation filled the stadium as the first whistle blew. Northern Colorado came out aggressive, putting some added pressure on Forward’s backline early. In the 15th minute, Forward Madison midfielder Stephen Payne sprinted down the right side and played a ball across the box to an open Jake Crull. Crull took a touch to the left and tried slotting a ball back post, but a Northern Colorado defender blocked the attempt, keeping the match scoreless. Forward Madison kept their foot on the gas, stringing together passes down the field. However, just as the half was about to end, Northern Colorado scored the first goal of the night. In the 45th minute, Golden Boot winner and NOCO’s striker, Trevor Amann, finished a loose ball in the box giving his squad the lead heading into halftime.
The ‘Mingos came out strong to start the second half. In the 55th minute, Payne crossed a ball into the box, finding the head of striker Christian Chaney. Chaney soared over the defender and buried the ball into the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1. Despite the goal, a momentum shift did not last long, and Northern Colorado was able to retake the lead in the 67th minute. Forward Madison made a few substitutions to spark offensive chances, but Colorado was able to counterattack off of a high FMFC defensive line. Amann scored two goals in the last ten minutes of the match to secure Hailstorm’s place in the semifinals with a final score of 4-1.
