SETTING THE SCENE:
Forward Madison FC returns to League play after having a bye week and a break for the first weekend of the USL Jägermeister Cup. The ‘Mingos are back at historic Breese Stevens Field to play Greenville Triumph SC for the second time this season.
Greenville currently sits in first place in the USL League One standings, with 13 points, while Forward Madison sits in seventh place. The match is set to kickoff at 6pm CT.
HISTORY WITH GREENVILLE
Greenville and Forward played each other in late March, ending in a 0-0 draw. Both teams had little offensive presence, with each team having less than eight total shots throughout the match.
‘MINGOS LAST MATCH RECAP
Forward played their first match in the USL Jägermeister Cup this past weekend against Lexington SC. The ‘Mingos found themselves up two players on the field after Lexington had a couple of red card infractions. Despite the advantage, Forward conceded a goal in the last minutes of stoppage time that would ultimately be the deciding factor in the game.
The match ended 0-1 in favor of Lexington and FMFC find themselves at the bottom of the Jägermeister Cup standings.
KEYS TO THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE BURISH GROUP AT UBS
With two back-to-back disappointing results, Forward Madison will need to step up and address the following to be successful:
- Execute in the final third. Forward may have dominated on the field in both possessions and shots, but the only statistic that matters is the result. Instead of going for the easy tap-in, the ‘Mingos offense needs to take shots early and often.
- High press early. If Forward can put pressure on Greenville’s backline early, it will disrupt their red-hot offense. Triumph has scored 12 goals in their first seven games, and five of those have come from Lyam MacKinnon. FMFC will need to control the pace of the game quickly by putting pressure on all ends of the pitch.
NEXT MATCH:
Next up, FMFC has a quick turnaround with a midweek game against One Knoxville on May 8th. Fans can watch the game on ESPN+ or head to the Forward Club for an FMFC Watch Party presented by Pacifico. Doors open at 4:30pm with the match set to kick off at 5:30pm CT.
