SETTING THE SCENE:
Forward Madison FC plays a quick midweek game against One Knoxville SC this Wednesday, May 8th. It’s the first time these two sides have faced each other this season, with Knoxville sitting in 4th place and Forward in 6th. The match is set to kick off in Tennessee at 5:30pm CT on ESPN+.
HISTORY WITH ONE KNOXVILLE
Last season, during Knoxville’s inaugural year, Forward finished 0-1-2 in the series. In all three matchups, only three total goals were scored between both sides.
Knoxville conceded the least amount of goals in USL League One last year (39) and proved to be a tough opponent for Forward’s offense. Nazeem Bartman was the only play for the ‘Mingos to score against the 2023 newcomers.
‘MINGOS LAST MATCH RECAP
It was an exciting and necessary win for Forward this past weekend, beating first place Greenville Triumph, 3-2. In the first minute of the match, Wolfgang Prentice scored his first goal of the season to put the ‘Gos up a point early at home.
In the second half, FMFC found themselves down 1-2; however, substitute Christian Chaney converted a penalty kick to tie the match. In the last few minutes of stoppage time, Juan Galindrez also put away his first goal of the season to top the Triumph in spectacular fashion. It was the first win at Breese Stevens Field for the ‘Mingos this season.
KEYS TO THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE BURISH GROUP AT UBS
After a great home win, Forward Madison will look to ride the momentum into Knoxville this week. Here are a few things to look for:
- Neutralize the midfield. Knoxville’s Angelo Kelly-Rosales leads the League in chances created (14) and has two goals and two assists on the season so far. If Forward can find a way to lock him down defensively, they’ll have a better chance of controlling the midfield. Look for Villalobos or Boyce to be in charge of manning Kelly-Rosales.
- Take chances early. Knoxville goalkeeper Sean Lewis was the 2023 USL League One Golden Glove Recipient. With two clean sheets so far this season, he will be tough to score against. After a three-goal game on Saturday, Forward will need to carry the momentum and offensive pressure with them to Tennessee and put shots on Lewis early.
NEXT MATCH:
Next up, FMFC extends their road trip to North Carolina to play Charlotte Independence on Saturday, May 11th. This will be the second round of the Jägermeister Cup and the first time the ‘Mingos will play Independence this season. Fans can watch the game on ESPN+ at 12pm CT. There will be no watch party held in the Forward Club due to scheduling conflicts.
