SETTING THE SCENE:
After a postponed match in Knoxville, FMFC extends their road trip to North Carolina to play Charlotte Independence this Saturday, May 11th. This will be the second round of the Jägermeister Cup and the first time the ‘Mingos will play Independence this season.
In the first round of the Cup, Charlotte beat South Georgia Tormenta FC in penalties, while Forward conceded a late goal to fall to Lexington.
HISTORY WITH CHARLOTTE INDEPENDENCE
In the last five matchups between teams, Forward has been unable to come up with a win against Charlotte. They have gone 0-3-2, conceding 10 goals and only scoring three.
‘MINGOS LAST MATCH RECAP
It was an exciting and necessary win for Forward this past weekend, beating first-place Greenville Triumph, 3-2. In the first minute of the match, Wolfgang Prentice scored his first goal of the season to put the ‘Gos up a point early at home.
In the second half, FMFC found themselves down 1-2; however, substitute Christian Chaney converted a penalty kick to tie the match. In the last few minutes of stoppage time, Juan Galindrez also put away his first goal of the season to top the Triumph in spectacular fashion. It was the first win at Breese Stevens Field for the ‘Mingos this season.
KEYS TO THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE BURISH GROUP AT UBS
With an unexpected break, Forward should have some fresh legs for the game in Charlotte. Here are a few things to look for:
- Carry the high momentum from the weekend. After an explosive and necessary win against first-place Greenville, Forward will need to find a way to keep the high going in Charlotte. Look for players like Chaney and Dieye, who have been trying to get back to full health, to add energy to the offense.
- Finish the game strong. In the last Jägermeister Cup match, Forward conceded a late goal, ultimately losing the game 0-1. With draws going straight to penalties, Forward will need to stay focused for the whole 90 minutes of a game. Even a draw can lead to one or two points in the standings, and every point will matter for this in-season tournament.
NEXT MATCH:
Next up, FMFC finishes their three-game road streak in Spokane for their first-ever matchup against Spokane Velocity. The match kicks off on Sunday, May 19th at 5pm CT. Fans can watch the match on ESPN+ or in the Forward Club for the FMFC Watch Party, presented by Summer Shandy. Doors open at 4pm and drinks will be available to purchase.
