SETTING THE SCENE:
Forward Madison FC plays League newcomers, Spokane Velocity FC, for the first time this regular season. FMFC currently sits in sixth place in the standings, one place behind Spokane. The match is set to kick off in Washington on Sunday, May 19th at 5:00pm CT on ESPN+.
‘MINGOS LAST MATCH RECAP
This past weekend, FMFC won their second game in a row against Charlotte Independence. It was the club’s first-ever Jägermeister Cup win with a 2-1 victory on the road.
In back-to-back matches, the team has scored in the game’s first five minutes, and this time, it was Christian Chaney who scored off an assist from Jake Crull to give the ‘Mingos the early lead. In the 79th minute, Derek Gebhard scored the game-winning goal to give his squad three points.
KEYS TO THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE BURISH GROUP AT UBS
After another win, Forward Madison will look to keep the streak going against Spokane. Here are a few things to look for:
- Dominate the full 90 minutes, not just the first 10. Although Forward has had back-to-back games with early goals, they haven’t had a clean sheet in the regular season since the end of March. The ‘Mingos will need to find a way to maintain their momentum without letting teams back into the games, which will be hard in Spokane, who are known to have larger crowds than most USL League One teams. Relying on their bench’s depth will be crucial to win the game.
- Be the first on the board. On paper, Spokane and Forward are very similar. Both with nine goals, two clean sheets, 52 shots, and a 1% difference in passing accuracy, these two teams are near identical. FMFC is one place behind Spokane on the table, so they will need to find a way to get three points from the weekend. Look for red-hot players like Christian Chaney and Derek Gebhard to lead the surge.
NEXT MATCH:
Next up, FMFC finally comes back to Madison to play at historic Breese Stevens Field on Saturday, May 25th. They’ll play One Knoxville SC in the third match of the Jägermeister Cup and the first one at home. The match will kick off at 6pm CT. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here.
