Match Action
The whistle blew on the sunny Sunday afternoon in Spokane, as both sides faced off for the first time. Spokane started strong, finding ways to exploit the Forward defense and create a few dangerous opportunities.
However, FMFC was able to create a few of their own on the road. In the 22nd minute, Nazeem Bartman made a run towards the box and passed it to Christian Chaney in the middle, who laid it off for Jimmie Villalobos at the top of the box. In one touch, Villalobos drilled it into the bottom right corner to give the ‘Gos the lead, 1-0.
A few minutes later, Spokane tried to equalize with a whipping cross from the left side of the field into the center of the box. Spokane player, Pierre Reedy, whipped a header to the back post, but Forward goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann made a diving save to keep his team in the lead.
In the 30th minute, the ‘Mingos looked to double their lead on the other end, where Stephen Payne hit a rocket from a few yards outside the box, but his shot was denied by the crossbar. Forward continued to surge in the attack, and in the 44th minute, they finally got their second goal. Devin Boyce found himself wide open at the top left of the 18-yard box, where he fired a shot into the upper 90 to put the ‘Gos up 2-0 at the half.
Spokane came into the second half hungry for their first goal of the night. Schipmann continued to come in clutch for the FMFC defense, making big save after big save to maintain the clean sheet.
In the 59th minute, Wolfgang Prentice dribbled his way around Spokane defenders and tried to slot the ball into the far corner, but it just went wide. FMFC wasn’t done yet. In the 63rd minute, Chaney picked up a loose ball from a Spokane free kick and played a long ball into the path of Aiden Mesias. Mesias beat his defender and slipped the ball into the back of the net for Madison’s third goal of the night.
The match ended 3-0 in favor of the away team, keeping Madison undefeated in the 2024 USL League One regular season.

Post Match Reaction
“I’m so proud of the players and the performance today,” said Head Coach Matt Glaeser. “After a tough trip, we played some excellent football at times and defended well as a group.”
“It was time a goal came. I had a few chances outside the box in different games, but couldn’t capitalize. Thankfully, this time around it went in,” said midfielder Jimmie Villalobos. “It felt very good to be able to help the team go up in the first half and build confidence going forward. Everyone did their jobs and maintained discipline in their rows, starting with the goalie and progressing to the forwards. We have a special group, and we will continue to grow to achieve great things with our club.”
“It felt good to get on the score sheet, and it was a great performance from the boys collectively,” said midfielder Aiden Mesias. “It showed from our striker assisting on two goals, three midfielders scoring, defenders keeping a clean sheet, our goalkeeper making big time saves, and substitutes seeing out the game. It was a great team performance!”
