SETTING THE SCENE:
Forward Madison FC looks to extend their lead atop the Central Group of the USL Jӓgermeister Cup with a clash against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC. This is the seventh round of the in-season cup, and FMFC is looking to maintain their unbeaten streak at home.
THIS SEASON AGAINST CHATTANOOGA
The last time these two teams played was in the fourth round of the Jägermeister Cup. All-time leading goalscorer for the Red Wolves, Juan Galindrez, scored an acrobatic goal in the 43rd minute, securing the win for the ‘Gos, 1-0, and the sixth consecutive win on the season.
‘MINGOS LAST MATCH RECAP
Last weekend, Forward Madison came back to tie Union Omaha, 2-2 to stay in contention for first place in the USL League One standings. Juan Galindrez scored his second scissor kick of the season to give his squad the lead to begin the second half.
Union Omaha scored two diving headers to go ahead, but former Owl, Jake Crull, scored his first goal of the season in stoppage time to give his team one point on the road.
KEYS TO THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE BURISH GROUP AT UBS
With two matches left of the Jägermeister Cup, Forward Madison will look to stay at the top of Group 2. While Chattanooga has been eliminated from winning the group, they still have a chance to advance on goals scored. Here’s what Forward will need to do to pull out a win:
- Prevent & delay quick Chattanooga transitions.
- The Red Wolves are quick to counter and are known to attack in transitional moments. FMFC will need to apply pressure immediately and break down any opportunities that Chattanooga can capitalize on.
- FMFC will also need to have good “Rest Defense”, meaning they are positioned in a way that prepares them for a quick counter when the ‘Gos have the ball in their defensive end. They can’t be caught off guard or become careless when attempting to build possession, otherwise the visiting team will capitalize.
- Maintain long periods of possession.
- Building out of the back and switching the field will be key for the ‘Mingos. One goal makes a difference in the cup matches, and since FMFC has only scored five goals throughout the tournament, they must maintain possession and control the pace of the match.
NEXT MATCH:
Next, Forward Madison stays at historic Breese Stevens Field to play Charlotte Independence on Wednesday, August 14th. Kickoff is at 7pm CT and tickets can still be purchased here.
