Forward Madison FC has re-signed 27-year-old forward Derek Gebhard, pending league and federation approval. The 6-foot Maine native has been with the Flamingos for two consecutive seasons, coming off a season where he logged 24 appearances and 21 starts.
Head Coach Matt Glaeser is excited to bring Gebhard back for a number of reasons. “Derek brings a lot of verticality to the team, [he] can play different positions, he’s quick, good on the dribble, and has a lot of upside… we feel like [he] has more to give,” Glaeser said.
Gebhard was a consistent presence for the ‘Mingos sporting the Pink and Blue last season. The forward recorded a passing accuracy of 84.5% and he accumulated 1 goal, 2 assists, 15 clearances, and 18 interceptions. The former Florida Gulf Coast Eagle played a key role for both Forward Madison’s attack and defense last season and he’ll look to do so again next year.
Before joining Forward Madison FC, Gebhard made a name for himself with the Jacksonville Armada in the NPSL from 2015-2018, as the winger posted six goals in his time with the club. Following his time with Armada, Gebhard had a couple of brief stints with USL Championship clubs, El Paso Locomotive and OKC Energy, before landing with the Charlotte Independence for a season, then ultimately finding a home in Madison.
Gebhard has one major goal in mind for the 2023 campaign. “[I] want to help the club get to where it belongs in the playoffs and give the fans, who’ve shown amazing support through two years here, something more to cheer for and be proud of,” Gebhard said.
