Forward Madison FC has exercised its contract option on midfielder, John Murphy Jr, for the 2025 season, pending league and federation approval. In his first season with the Mingos he appeared in 21 games while starting in 15. Murphy’s role with the squad expanded as the season progressed as Head Coach and Technical Director, Matt Glaeser, recognized his evolution and growth on the pitch.
“Murph had a really strong campaign with us in 2024. He grew possibly the most of anyone last season and we see him continuing to develop and improve his game,” Glaeser said, “He is a hard working, team-first player who has the quality to play between the lines and mobility to defend centrally.”
Murphy proved to be a dynamic force for Forward Madison FC this season, making contributions on both ends of the pitch. Offensively, he delivered 3 goals and 1 assist. Defensively, Murphy’s presence was undeniable, leading all FMFC midfielders with 18 interceptions and 19 clearances.
“Although we had a historic season as a club last year, we feel we fell short of a few goals we set,” Murphy said. He expressed his eagerness to return to Madison saying, “I couldn’t be more excited to run it back in 2025 and fight for trophies in front of the best fans in the league.”
A New Jersey native, Murphy began his journey with the United States Youth National Team, representing the U-15 through U-17 levels. His international experience also includes a U-18 National Team camp with Ireland, where he holds dual citizenship, prior to playing collegiate soccer at Clemson University.
In 2021, he was part of Union Omaha’s USL League One Championship squad, appearing in eight matches and contributing one assist. The following year, he captained New York Red Bulls II during the 2022 season, delivering two goals and three assists over 30 appearances. In 2023, he continued his professional career with South Georgia Tormenta FC. There Murphy appeared in 28 matches, logged ten starts, and had one assist.
