USL W League Madison Names William Banahene New Goalkeeper Coach
Milwaukee Wave Keeper to Propel Women’s Team to New Heights
MADISON, WI: USL W League Madison announces another major addition to the technical staff roster ahead of their inaugural season beginning in May 2026. William Banahene, a highly-regarded goalkeeper for the Milwaukee Wave, will bring his years of professional playing and coaching experience to Madison. His enthusiasm for the sport spans beyond competition and extends into the development of the next generation of soccer stars.
“Willie is an incredible addition to the Madison W League staff,” said USL W League Madison Technical Director, Liz Lawrence. “His energy, enthusiasm, and deep experience elevate our entire program, and his leadership will be especially impactful in the growth of our goalkeepers.”
Banahene is passionate about sharing his talents and love for the game with the next generation of keepers. He currently works with two of the top youth soccer clubs in Milwaukee: the Milwaukee Kickers and SC Wave. His position with SC Wave includes a strong leadership stake in the MLS Next and Girl’s Academy programs. Banahene has coached numerous young athletes through to prestigious collegiate programs such as Syracuse University, New Hampshire University, and the University of Nebraska.
“William brings a level of professionalism, intensity, and care that elevates everyone around him,” said USL W League Madison Head Coach, Giuliano Oliviero. “His experience in the professional game and his ability to connect with young players will be a huge asset to our goalkeepers and our entire team.”
Banahene’s goalkeeping aspirations began when he was just eight-year-old, and have culminated into his current position as the goalkeeper for the Milwaukee Wave, Milwaukee’s Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) team. His extraordinary ability to defend the net has earned him the title, “Will the Wall.” Collegiately, he was named an All-American at State University of New York-Canton, and holds the all-time save percentage record at State University of New York-Buffalo. Prior to his move to professional indoor soccer, he spent two years with the Rochester Lancers. In his rookie year, he logged an average of only 0.71 goals against and earned Fourth Team All-NPSL, even more impressive considering the league comprised nearly 100 teams. For two consecutive years, his performance landed him a place among the top five goalies in both saves and save percentage.
“I’m excited to join the staff for 2026,” said Banahene. “Coach Giuliano is one of the best coaches in the country, and I’ve had the privilege of working with him both as a player and as a coach. Having also worked with Tenzin and Liz in the past, I can’t think of a better group to begin the journey in Madison. I’m truly fortunate to be a part of it, and I can’t wait to get started!”
This announcement cements USL W League Madison as an organization committed to offering its players the best resources for holistic development. As the season approaches, the team will be united under one cohesive brand and mission, which will be announced on December 12th at the Sylvee. More details on this free event can be found here.
