Forward Madison FC will host an exhibition game against major Mexican soccer club Leones Negros de la Universidad de Guadalajara on Tuesday, July 16 at 7 p.m. at historic Breese Stevens Field, the team announced Monday. Leones Negros – also known as UdeG – represents Mexico’s third-largest city, Guadalajara, and replaces Querétaro FC, which pulled out of its friendly with FMFC due to a scheduling conflict.

Former Mexican National Team superstar Omar Bravo is expected to be with Leones Negros in Madison. Bravo, the all-time leading goal scorer for Chivas Guadalajara, recently joined UdeG to begin a coaching apprenticeship under head coach Ricardo Rayos.

 Leones Negros is visiting Madison as part of its 45th anniversary celebration, honoring a history that includes a Copa MX trophy, a CONCACAF Champions’ Cup title and three runner-up finishes in Mexico’s first division. Forward Madison defender Christian “Pato” Díaz, who played for Leones Negros from 2013-2016, said the team holds a special place in his heart.

“It’s a great club, great people, everything, honestly,” Díaz said. “It’s going to be really special for the fans and special for us, too. It’s going to be a great experience for all of us.”

Forward Madison FC Chief Operating Officer Conor Caloia said fans will be excited to see a team of Leones Negros’ caliber in Madison.

“To have a historic team like Leones Negros choose to come to Madison is a wonderful thing for our team and our city,” Caloia said. “We’re looking forward to an incredible atmosphere and a fun night for soccer fans from around the Madison area as we celebrate their 45th anniversary.”

According to Leones Negros President Mtro. Jose Alberto Castellanos Gutiérrez, the game will honor the legacies of two soccer clubs old and new.

“We are very excited to travel to Madison and have the Leones Negros play against the Flamingos and for our fans in the United States as part of our 45th anniversary celebration,” Gutiérrez said. 

Season ticket holders and fans who had already purchased tickets to the Queretaro game will have their same ticket transfer over automatically and do not need to take any action. The match against Leones Negros takes place at the same date and time as the previously-scheduled match.

Forward Madison FC put on a magical performance Saturday night, stunning USL League One leaders North Texas SC in a 4-1 demolition in front of over 4,200 fans at Breese Stevens Field. FMFC’s Don Smart led the way, scoring two goals and adding an assist as the Flamingos came from behind and turned the game on its head.

“From the beginning the coach told us not to back off, just keep going, just keep going,” Smart said. “The only way to win this game [was] energy, and all of the guys gave their best out here today and we came out with a victory.”

The win was the perfect way to cap off National Pink Flamingo Day for Forward Madison, which celebrated by giving out 1,008 flamingos, offering special beer fla-MUG-o ticket packages and having a plastic flamingo perform the ceremonial first kick.

Ronaldo Damus gave North Texas an early lead, but Forward Madison played well on the counter-attack to stay even with the league leaders. Despite not fielding a full-strength lineup – USL top scorer Ricardo Pepi was with FC Dallas, and North Texas had just three players on its bench – the visitors were able to control possession early on through Thomas Roberts and Arturo Rodriguez.

However, despite being down a goal, the Flamingos weren’t going to quit easily. The ‘Mingos moved quickly through the middle of the pitch thanks to star midfielder Josiel Núñez, who had returned from a two-game suspension. Núñez hit a hard, low shot in the 34th minute that forced a rebound off goalkeeper Carlos Avilez for Don Smart, and Smart pounced on the ball to level the score.

With the season now truly beginning to kick into full gear, FMFC showcased a more composed style of play as the Flamingos worked out from the back to break North Texas’ press and utilized the confidence of J.C. Banks, who showed off his moves on multiple occasions to keep his team in the danger area.

During the second half, Forward Madison kicked the game into a higher gear. Although North Texas came close from a free kick the 62nd minute and forced goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre into a last-ditch sliding save in the 63rd minute, the visitors began to see their chances fade away.

In the 64th minute, Smart scored his second of the game, with midfielder Brandon Eaton setting up the “King from Kingston” to smash a shot into the top corner and seize the lead.

Núñez, who showed off his playmaking skills all night to the delight of the crowd, padded the score in the 78th minute with a goal that made the game 3-1. Smart set up the Panamanian, who did the rest with a beautiful stepover and a low blast past Avilez at his near post.

The Flamingos continued to fly through the finish line when Banks scored his second goal of the season, sending a smooth drive past the Avilez in the 84th minute.

As if the night couldn’t get any better, midfielder Danny Tenorio subbed on in the 86th minute for his first official minutes as a Flamingo. Tenorio had missed the opening months of the season while recovering from a torn meniscus, but seems set to make his mark as he returns to full match fitness.

With the Flamingos now up to 7th in the USL League One standings, Head Coach Daryl Shore said his team needs to start making a push toward the playoff places.

“We’ve got the best home field advantage in the league, and we told the guys that we need to start rewarding our fans,” Shore said. “We’re starting to play better, we’re a little bit more rested, so [we’ve] got to keep going.”

FMFC will stay at home for a few more days, hosting Major League Soccer club Minnesota United FC in a major exhibition match on Tuesday night that Forward officials expect to draw one of the largest crowds of the season. The Flamingos return to League One play next Friday, June 28, beginning a three-game road stretch with a game against Toronto FC II.

According to Smart, the Flamingos have found their groove and are ready for what’s next.

Forward Madison FC may have snapped its losing streak last week, but the team will have to be prepared for a new obstacle Saturday as it hosts league-leading North Texas SC at 7 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field.

The Flamingos have already played North Texas twice on the road and lost each time, but Saturday’s game will give them the opportunity for revenge on home turf. FMFC plays North Texas four times this year, more than any other USL League One team, which has led the two clubs’ social media channels to nickname their made-up rivalry “El Plástico.”

FMFC can also look ahead to the game for its celebration of National Pink Flamingo Day, which takes place on Sunday, June 23. FMFC is giving out 1,008 plastic flamingos to the first-arriving fans, who are encouraged to be at Breese Stevens Field when gates open at 6 p.m.

According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, the ‘Mingos have their eyes set on turning the tables on League One’s first-place team.

“The league is pretty well balanced and I think you’re seeing that on any given night – any team’s going to (be able to) win,” Shore said. “We feel like it’s a game where we’re not afraid of them, that’s for sure. We know they’re good and we respect them. But at the same time they’ve got to show a little bit of respect for us at our place.”

FMFC, although sitting in last place in the League One table, comes into Saturday still reaching towards the top. The ‘Mingos have at least one game in hand on most teams above them, and could pull within three points of a playoff spot with a win. Shore will be boosted by the return of midfielder Josiel Núñez, who has finished serving a two-game suspension.

Shore said Forward Madison’s 2-1 win over FC Tucson last Saturday should boost his team’s confidence.

“[I was] excited that we were able to do that and hopefully now keep it going with a tough game this weekend,” Shore said. “We needed to win a game.”

North Texas SC, meanwhile, has cooled off after a white-hot start to the season, but remains at the top of League One. The Texans have won two of their last five, but midfielder Bicou Bissainthe will be absent, called in to the Haiti National Team, and forward Ricardo Pepi, who leads League One in goals, played 58 minutes Wednesday in FC Dallas’ 2-1 U.S. Open Cup loss to New Mexico United.

North Texas may be contending with several absences on Saturday, although it’s too early to tell who the missing players might be. One who won’t be there for sure is midfielder Bicou Bissainthe (pictured), who has been called up to the Haiti national team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Striker Ricardo Pepi, meanwhile, who leads League One with seven goals, is set to start in FC Dallas’ U.S. Open Cup game this Wednesday, meaning he will either be on short rest or unavailable altogether against the Flamingos.

Forward Madison FC will give away plastic pink flamingos to the first 1,008 fans at the team’s game against North Texas SC on Saturday, the club announced Tuesday. The special promotion, believed to be the largest pink flamingo giveaway ever, is part of FMFC’s larger celebration of National Pink Flamingo Day during Saturday’s game.

National Pink Flamingo Day – established in 2007 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic lawn ornament – takes place on June 23, one day after FMFC’s home game. Along with the giveaway, Forward Madison will be rolling out celebratory initiatives throughout the week, including a city-wide scavenger hunt for more flamingos.

Forward Madison, which currently leads USL League One in attendance in its inaugural season with over 4,000 fans per game, has embraced the pink flamingo from the start. “Our fans have really been behind us and have really been giving us their all, and we owed it to them to come out and put a solid performance in,” he said. “They’re awesome. There are no other words to describe it. They’re awesome.

With their losing skid snapped, the Flamingos can look Forward to another full week of rest before a challenging home game next Saturday against league-leading North Texas SC. After that, FMFC will host Major League Soccer’s Minnesota United in a special exhibition.

“You’re not always going to get an early goal, but the start of it was very good and I think that gave our guys a lot of relief,” Shore said. “We came out and played really well.”

Forward Madison FC has a huge chance to dig itself out of a hole Saturday night, as the Flamingos host FC Tucson at Breese Stevens Field at 7 p.m. (tickets available here). FMFC has lost four straight games in USL League One, meaning it needs to start picking up points to remain within touching distance of the playoff race.

Still, although the ‘Mingos recent form has been poor, there’s reason to be optimistic about Saturday’s match. For the first time in over a month, Forward Madison did not play a midweek game, meaning the team comes in with eight days of rest. On the other side, FC Tucson is coming into the match after playing on the road in Orlando on Wednesday.

Speaking on “Let Me Be Forward” this week, Head Coach Daryl Shore said the extra time in training has given his team the opportunity to focus on cleaning up some of its recent problems.

“We’re playing well enough to at least get points out of these games,” Shore said. “We’ve got to get our confidence back. We’ve got to keep fighting and we’ve got to keep pushing each other. It’s one of those things where, if we can get on the scoresheet first, we feel like we’ve got a good chance to win.”

Saturday will also be a special night off the field, as Forward Madison celebrates the FIFA Women’s World Cup with its “Tribute to Women in Soccer” night. Fans who purchase a special ticket package before the Friday deadline will get access to an exclusive “Women in Soccer” pre-match panel, and FMFC will honor Madison native and two-time Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Tarpley in a pre-game ceremony.

FMFC comes into Saturday relatively injury-free, with midfielder Danny Tenorio approaching his full return from a preseason meniscus tear. Midfielder Josiel Núñez, however, is serving a suspension for the match due to his behavior during the Flamingos’ loss to Lansing Ignite.

FC Tucson, meanwhile, is currently riding a hot streak, sitting in fourth place in the USL League One table with a three-match unbeaten run. That being said, Tucson has been less than stellar on the road recently, having lost three of its past four away games. The Arizona team is owned by USL Championship club Phoenix Rising FC, and will likely have several Rising players on loan for Saturday’s game.

According to Shore, it’s a difficult matchup for the Flamingos, but not an impossible one.

“They’re a team that’s going to come into Breese Stevens thinking they’re going to be playing against a team that’s on a little bit of a slide, so they’re going to have some confidence,” Shore said. “We’re not going to get discouraged.”

Following its match against FC Tucson, the Flamingos will line up for two more home games at Breese Stevens Field. FMFC will look to avenge previous losses to North Texas SC on Saturday, June 22, before hosting Minnesota United FC in a major exhibition game on June 25.

This weekend, though, all the focus is all on ending a stubborn losing streak for a league-leading home crowd.
