Forward Madison FC left it late Friday afternoon as Danny Tenorio scored with less than ten minutes left in regulation to salvage a 1-1 draw on the road against Toronto FC II. The draw extended FMFC’s three-match unbeaten streak in USL League One, and the goal marked Ecuadorian forward Danny Tenorio’s first official score for the Flamingos.
The point temporarily moves Madison up to sixth place in League One, within touching distance of the four prized playoff spots. The Flamingos had dropped all the way to last earlier in the month, but have gained ground as the team has started to find its groove.
Going into the match, FMFC was always at somewhat of a disadvantage in terms of rest, having played an exhibition game against Minnesota United FC on Tuesday. Toronto, meanwhile, had over a week off, and was playing at BMO Training Ground, where the Young Reds have not lost yet this season.
The Flamingos came out well, though, and had the first big chance of the game in the 33rd minute. Christian Díaz turned free from his marker, unleashing a shot that was parried into the path of forward J.C. Banks. With the goal gaping, Banks put the ball on target, but Toronto goalkeeper Kevin Silva managed to push it away.
Jordan Perruzza opened the scoring for Toronto FC II just before halftime following a tidy exchange with Gideon Waja at the top of the penalty area. Waja found Perruzza’s run with a one-touch pass and Perruzza did well pick out the bottom corner with a left-footed half volley.
Following the halftime break, FMFC pushed on, looking for the goal that would tie the game. Despite chance after chance, it seemed like it wouldn’t come for the Flamingos.
Finally, though, in the 81st minute, Tenorio found a way to pull Madison level and rescue a point. After Silva spilled a cross served in by Carter Manley, Tenorio found himself in the right place at the right time to nod it home and equalize. The goal was Tenorio’s second of the week, following his effort against Minnesota United, and a welcome moment for the man who had been sidelined for the first several months of the season with a meniscus tear.
With one road result confirmed, Forward Madison will now turn its attention to another difficult away game as it prepares to visit second-place South Georgia Tormenta FC next Saturday, July 6. The Tormenta match will officially mark the halfway point for the Flamingos’ inaugural season, which started with much fanfare off the field, and is now close to being matched by some impressive performances on it.
