Forward Madison and Madison-based Vintage Brewing Company, along with the club's supporters group, The Flock, officially launched the Irruption Pale Ale on Wednesday, giving soccer fans a new team-themed beer to fall in love with. The beer will be available as early as this Saturday through a no-contact pickup package released alongside the announcement.

As part of the deal, a portion of proceeds from all sales will be donated to the Flock Soccer Fund, which works with local groups to ​provide opportunities to play soccer in underserved communities.

The new beer is an English Pale Ale, crafted with imported Kent and Fuggle hops. The name, “Irruption,” comes from a phenomenon of irregularly migrating birds and references the team’s 2019 Irruption bus tour.

According to Angelique Thompson, Director of Sales at Vintage Brewing Co., the Irruption Pale Ale represents some of the best elements of Madison.

"We are happy to join forces with such an enthusiastic group of people who are making an incredible difference in our community,” Thompson said. “Great beer paired with great people is the perfect recipe for a successful fundraiser."

Kyle Griffin, a member of The Flock who worked closely with Vintage’s brewers, said the beer will appeal to a wide range of people.

“The team at Vintage worked with us from the start – talking about what beer styles we all enjoyed the most, what would be easy to drink on those sultry nights at Breese, and what would be interesting to create,” Griffin said. “Including us at every step of the way, it was truly enjoyable to shape a beer with Vintage that would appeal to the diverse tastes of as many Forward fans as possible.”

Forward Madison FC revealed its 2020 home goalkeeper jersey on Monday, keeping the black-and-gold color scheme popularized in the club's inaugural year.

Forward Madison FC revealed its 2020 home goalkeeper jersey on Monday, keeping the black-and-gold color scheme popularized in the club’s inaugural year.

The jersey features a sublimated palm tree pattern, an allusion to the more typical climes of flamingos outside of Madison. Forward's goalkeepers will primarily wear the new kit during home matches, although the pink flamingo jersey will make a return during away games.

The 2020 Forward Madison goalkeeper kit is now available for purchase on the club's web store.

Forward Madison’s hopes in the USL eCup will come down to the team’s final group stage game. Forward will play FC Tulsa of the USL Championship on Friday, April 10 at 4 p.m. on ESPN3, with the winner advancing to the tournament’s knockout round.

The USL eCup, which features 32 teams from across the USL Championship and USL League One, was organized to give fans a respite during outdoor sports’ pandemic postponement. Teams compete in Rocket League, a video game hybrid of soccer and auto racing. The teams are divided into groups of four, and the top two finishers from each group advance to a knockout stage.

Forward Madison lost its first game to Birmingham Legion FC, but a timely substitution – swapping out midfielder Brandon Eaton for season ticket holder Mitchell Meerman – proved vital as the Flamingos roared back to defeat Memphis 901 FC in two sets (7-1, 7-1) on Tuesday. 

Against FC Tulsa on Friday, Meerman will face the only other team in the group that has both won and lost a game, meaning the winner will advance to the knockout round and the loser will exit the tournament.

 “I’m going to have to bring my A-Game against FC Tulsa if we want to move on to the knockout stage,” Meerman said. “I’m glad I could bring Forward its first win of the season, and I’m looking forward to bringing a second.”

Forward Madison FC is working to help River Food Pantry feed Madison’s most vulnerable populations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday, the Flamingos released a “Forward For Madison” T-shirt and announced that 10 dollars from every sale will benefit the River Food Pantry. The funds will help River continue to provide food to families in need as more Madisonians feel the effects of the pandemic.

According to Forward Madison COO Conor Caloia, the collaboration with River Food Pantry is one way to give back to the community in a time of need.

“We’ve always said that Forward Madison is a club by and for the community, so now is the time for us to have Madison’s back,” Caloia said. “River Food Pantry is doing a tremendous job helping the city through this crisis and we’re proud to support them. Now, we’re asking the whole Forward family to rally together and join us.”

River Food Pantry’s current operations include a school lunch program and a curbside pickup pantry.

The United Soccer League (USL) announced today that its relationship with ESPN will extend to the eSports realm, with the organization becoming the official streaming platform for USL eCup: Rocket League Edition, which will kick off on Wednesday afternoon on the ESPN app and ESPN.com. 

The 32-team World Cup-style tournament features clubs from across the USL Championship and League One competing for bragging rights in the digital arena, and will also benefit local charities nominated by each club to receive donations from fans tuned into the broadcasts and the tournament over the next month.

Forward Madison’s USL eCup team is captained by midfielder Brandon Eaton, who will be assisted by two alternates: Official Forward eSports player Evan Warwick and season ticket holder Mitchell Meerman.

The Flamingos have been drawn into a group comprising USL Championship teams Birmingham Legion FC, Memphis 901 FC and FC Tulsa. FMFC’s first match – against Birmingham – will stream on Friday, April 3 at 3 p.m. CT.

“We are excited our first esports venture will be brought to fans on ESPN’s digital platforms,” said USL Sr. Vice President, Digital, Emerging Technology & Strategy Lizzie Seedhouse. “While we can’t wait to see our teams return to action on the field, this tournament will serve as a fun diversion that does a tremendous amount of good in communities across North America.”

The ESPN app provides sports fans with exclusive content covering the National Football League, College Football, Major League Soccer and more since its launch. The service will give all fans of the USL and esports with a Pay TV subscription the opportunity to watch every game in the USL eCup: Rocket League Edition. 

USL on ESPN Game of the Week broadcast team Mike Watts (PBP) and Devon Kerr (Color) will provide commentary for every game of the tournament. The tournament’s broadcasts will be produced by USL Productions, the league’s state-of-the-art broadcast production, broadcast and distribution facilities with VISTA Worldlink in south Florida.
